Vacation Cabin Rodent Control — South Lake Tahoe, CA

Your cabin sat empty all winter. The mice moved in, and they had five months to do whatever they wanted.

Vacation cabins in South Lake Tahoe are the perfect storm for rodent problems. They're vacant for months. They're surrounded by deer mouse habitat — pine forest, woodpiles, open ground. They have gaps and cracks from decades of freeze-thaw cycles. And nobody's there to hear the scratching.

We do pre-season cabin inspections, winter sealing, and rapid spring cleanouts so you can open the cabin without the surprise.

Why Cabins Get Hit So Hard in Winter

Think about it from the mouse's perspective. October hits. First snow falls. Temperatures drop below freezing at night. Everything outside is getting buried and cold.

Then there's your cabin. Dark. Quiet. Nobody home. Maybe the heat's set to 50 degrees so the pipes don't freeze — which means it's still 40 degrees warmer than outside. There's shelter under the floor, in the walls, in the attic. There might be food — a forgotten box of crackers, pet food in the garage, birdseed in the shed. There are dozens of gaps where pipes, wires, and vents pass through the walls.

A deer mouse doesn't need an invitation. It needs a quarter-inch gap. And an empty cabin has hundreds of them.

Here's what makes cabins different: nobody catches it early. In an occupied house, you hear scratching within a week. In a vacant cabin, a pair of mice in October becomes a colony by February — gestation is 19 to 21 days, and a single pair can produce 60+ offspring in a year.

The Classic Spring Opening Day — What We Find

When we do spring cleanouts on SLT cabins, here's what we walk into:

Nests in insulation. Deer mice shred fiberglass and cellulose to build nests in attics, between floor joists, and inside wall cavities. A cabin empty from November to May can have dozens of nest sites.

Droppings everywhere. Kitchen counters, inside drawers, on bedding, along baseboards, in the pantry. One mouse produces 50 to 75 droppings a day — multiply that by months.

Chewed everything. Electrical wiring in the attic and under the house. Plastic food containers. Fabric on furniture. Insulation on pipes. If it's chewable, they've chewed it.

Contaminated kitchen. This ruins opening weekend — instead of cooking dinner, you're bleaching every surface because mouse droppings are in the silverware drawer.

Dead mice in walls. Some didn't make it through the winter. Now there's a decomposition smell that gets worse as the cabin warms up.

Hantavirus exposure. Deer mice are the primary hantavirus carriers in the Sierra Nevada. Opening a cabin that's been a mouse house all winter means walking into months of accumulated droppings and urine dust. Never sweep or vacuum — use wet disinfection and wear a mask. We've seen too many owners grab a broom and start sweeping a contaminated cabin. Don't be that person.

Our Cabin Service — Three Seasons of Protection

Spring: Pre-Season Inspection and Cleanout

Before you settle in for the season, we go through the cabin top to bottom. Attic, crawlspace, kitchen, bedrooms, garage, shed. We look for winter damage: new entry points from snow and ice, nesting sites, contamination, chewed wiring, droppings accumulation.

We trap what's there, remove the contamination, and get the cabin safe and livable. Most spring cleanouts take one visit. Heavy cases take two.

Summer/Fall: Exclusion and Sealing

While the cabin is occupied and the weather is good, we seal every entry point — foundation vents, pipe penetrations, roofline gaps, garage door seals, crawlspace access — with steel mesh, metal flashing, hardware cloth, copper mesh, and hydraulic cement. Sealing in September prevents the next winter's invasion.

Winter: Monitoring (Optional Protection Plan)

On our monthly protection plan ($49–$59/month), we check the cabin through the winter — servicing exterior stations and watching for new activity. If something's wrong, we catch it in December, not next May.

Shuttering Your Cabin for Winter — What Actually Helps

If you close the cabin for the season, here's what makes a difference — and what doesn't:

What helps:

What helps most of all: professional exclusion before the snow flies. Seal the cabin in September or October and you skip the whole problem.

Why DIY Cabin Rodent Control Fails

Most cabin owners try to handle it themselves. Here's why it usually doesn't work:

You're not there to maintain it. You set traps in October and leave. By November the traps are full and useless. Trapping only works with follow-up visits — which is why our process includes them.

You can't find all the entry points. A cabin that's been through 30 Sierra winters has gaps you won't see without crawling under the house and into the attic. Seal the five you can see and the mice use the fifteen you can't.

The hantavirus risk in a spring cleanout is real. Walking into a cabin with five months of deer mouse accumulation and sweeping it with a broom is exactly how people get exposed. If you're opening the cabin and it's bad, call us first.

Cabin Rodent FAQs — South Lake Tahoe

How much does it cost to get my cabin ready for the season?▾

One-time removal starts at $199 (inspection, trapping, follow-up visits). Heavy contamination cleanup is a separate custom quote. Full exclusion to prevent next winter starts at $349.

When should I seal the cabin — spring or fall?▾

Fall. Seal in September or October, before the first snow drives mice indoors. Spring sealing works too, but you've already survived one winter of damage by then. If you can only pick one season to invest in, make it fall.

Can you check my cabin during the winter while I'm away?▾

Yes. Our monthly protection plan ($49–$59/month) includes regular checks through the winter. We service exterior stations, look for new entry activity, and catch problems early. If we find something, we handle it and report back to you.

I opened my cabin and it's full of droppings. What do I do first?▾

Don't sweep. Don't vacuum. Open the windows to ventilate, and call us. We'll assess the contamination, clean it up safely, and check for active mice. Up here those are usually deer mouse droppings — so the hantavirus protocol is not optional.

Do you work on cabins in the surrounding basin communities?▾

We serve South Lake Tahoe, CA. If your cabin is in one of the surrounding Lake Tahoe basin communities, call us and we'll talk through your situation.

How do I keep this from happening every year?▾

Full exclusion in the fall, plus a winter monitoring plan. Seal the cabin tight, then have someone check on it through the winter. After one season of this, most owners never deal with a spring mouse disaster again.
