Airbnb & Short-Term Rental Rodent Control — South Lake Tahoe, CA
In South Lake Tahoe's short-term rental market, one rodent review can cost you thousands in lost bookings. Guests don't care that deer mice are native to the Sierra Nevada. They don't care that every cabin at 6,225 feet deals with this. They see droppings, they write the review, and your occupancy rate drops.
Before you book, see what rodent control costs in South Lake Tahoe: inspection free, one-time removal from $199, full exclusion from $349.

Why STRs Are Especially Vulnerable
Short-term rentals combine every rodent risk factor into one property:
Constant guest turnover. Different people every few days. Doors left open. Food left out. Crumbs everywhere. Trash bins overflowing. Every check-in is a new food source and every checkout is a new mess to attract mice.
Gaps between bookings. A rental that sits empty for two weeks in January is a vacant cabin. Deer mice move in during the gap, and the next guest arrives to droppings on the counter. The mouse doesn't care that someone's checking in Friday.
Cleaning crews aren't pest inspectors. Your cleaner wipes counters and changes sheets — they're not checking the attic or noticing new gnaw marks behind the water heater.
Older cabin stock. A huge share of SLT vacation rentals are older cabins — charming, wood-paneled, and full of gaps. Freeze-thaw cycles, settling foundations, and decades of Sierra winters have opened entry points everywhere.
The Tahoe Keys and Stateline rental corridors. High-density rental areas near the lake and the state line see the most turnover and the most pressure. More guests, more food waste, more attractants — and Norway rats are possible near the shoreline, adding a second species to watch for.
Guest behavior you can't control. Half your guests won't read your note about sealing food. The other half will leave a pizza box on the counter overnight. Mice need almost nothing.
The Review Problem — Why This Is Urgent
Let's be blunt about the economics. A single review mentioning rodents does disproportionate damage to a listing:
- It kills trust instantly. Guests choosing between three cabins will skip the one with "mouse" in a review. Every time.
- It sticks around. That review doesn't expire. It's there for every future guest to read.
- It invites follow-up questions. Even after you fix the problem, guests message asking "is the mouse problem resolved?" — and some book elsewhere.
- Superhost status is at risk. Consistent low ratings from pest-related complaints can threaten the badges and placement that drive your bookings.
The cost of prevention — a monthly plan at $49 to $59 — is nothing compared to the cost of one bad review during peak season.
What We Do for STR Hosts
Rapid Response — Guest Reported Something
A guest found droppings. A guest heard scratching. A guest saw a mouse. This is urgent — you may have another guest checking in this week.
We prioritize STR calls — same-day or next-day service. We inspect, identify the species and entry points, set traps, and handle the immediate problem. Call us the moment a guest reports something. Don't wait until checkout.
Between-Booking Inspections
We can schedule quick inspections between guests — especially in winter and shoulder season when gaps between bookings are longer. We check for new droppings, new entry activity, and nesting signs. A 30-minute check between bookings catches problems before the next guest does.
Full Exclusion — The Permanent Fix
Seal the rental tight and most of this goes away. Full exclusion — every entry point sealed with steel mesh, metal flashing, hardware cloth, and hydraulic cement — means mice can't get in regardless of what guests do. Removal plus full exclusion starts at $349.
Winter Protection for the Off-Season
If your rental goes dark for part of the winter, our monthly protection plan ($49–$59/month) keeps eyes on it. Exterior stations serviced, entry points monitored, rapid response if something gets in. You reopen in spring without the surprise.
Prevention Checklist for STR Hosts
Things you can do on your end between our visits:
- Seal all food storage. Provide sealed containers for dry goods. Don't rely on guests to do it — make it the default.
- Trash discipline. Secure bins with locking lids. Don't let trash pile up between pickups. Overflowing bins are a rodent magnet.
- Brief your cleaner. Ask them to report droppings, gnaw marks, or nesting material — not just clean around them. Give them our number.
- Don't leave pet food out. If you're pet-friendly, require guests to store pet food sealed and never leave bowls out overnight.
- Firewood away from the house. Stack it at least 20 feet out. Woodpiles against the cabin are deer mouse condos.
- Fix it fast. The longer you wait after a guest report, the worse it gets — and the more guests see it.
Why DIY Doesn't Work for Rentals
You're not there. Most STR owners don't live in South Lake Tahoe. You can't set traps, check them, and follow up. Trapping without follow-up is useless — full traps catch nothing.
Store-bought poison is a liability. A guest's dog eats a poisoned mouse. A child finds a bait block under the sink. Loose poison in a rental property is a lawsuit waiting to happen. We use snap traps indoors and locked exterior stations only.
Your cleaner isn't a pest tech. Wiping up droppings without identifying the species, finding the entry point, and sealing it means the problem comes back for the next guest. Cleaning is not pest control.
One bad review costs more than a year of prevention. The math is simple. Act before the guest finds it, not after.
STR Rodent FAQs — South Lake Tahoe
How fast can you respond if a guest reports mice?▾
Same day or next day. STR calls get priority because we know you've got a listing and a review at stake. Call us the moment you hear about it.
How much does it cost?▾
One-time rodent removal starts at $199. Removal plus full exclusion starts at $349. Monthly protection plans run $49–$59/month. The inspection is free — we'll tell you exactly what the property needs.
Can you inspect between guests?▾
Yes. We schedule between-booking inspections, especially in winter when gaps are longer. Quick check, written report, and you're clear for the next check-in.
What if the problem is in a condo or townhome with shared walls?▾
Shared-wall buildings need building-level attention — mice travel through wall voids and shared crawlspaces. We can treat your unit, but we'll also tell you honestly if the building needs a coordinated approach. Talk to your HOA; we work with those too.
Do you use poison? I have guests with pets and kids.
No loose poison inside, ever. We use snap traps indoors along confirmed travel paths, and locked tamper-resistant bait stations on the exterior only. Pet and kid safe.
My rental is in the Tahoe Keys area. Is that different?▾
The Keys have higher rental density and shoreline proximity, which means more attractants and the possibility of Norway rats near the water in addition to the usual deer mice and house mice. We adjust the approach based on what we find during the inspection.
Can you help me respond to a bad review about rodents?▾
We provide dated service documentation showing professional inspection and treatment. That supports a factual, calm public response. We can't remove the review — but documentation helps you tell the true story.
Should I tell guests about the monthly service?▾
That's your call, but many hosts frame it positively: "professionally maintained and inspected." Guests like knowing the property is cared for. It's a trust signal, not a warning.
