Signs of Rats in Your Home in South Lake Tahoe, CA — Real Evidence vs. Mouse Look-Alikes
This page teaches you to read that evidence the way we do on inspections, so you can tell a genuine rat case from the far more common mouse story.
Most "rat" calls up here turn out to be mice — our rat removal in South Lake Tahoe starts by identifying the species, so the plan matches the animal.

The Signs That Actually Indicate Rats
Droppings — the single best test
Size settles most arguments. Mouse droppings look like dark grains of rice. Norway rat droppings are roughly 3/4 inch long, thick, and blunt-ended — closer to a raisin or an olive pit. Find pellets that size in a crawl space, garage, or along a foundation wall and you have real reason to suspect rats. Our rodent droppings identification guide shows the full size-and-shape comparison.
Gnaw damage with muscle behind it
Mice leave fine, paired grooves. Rats cut: gnawed-through wood edges, holes enlarged in subflooring and siding, chewed plastic pipe and stored items with chunks missing. Fresh rat gnawing shows light-colored, fresh wood at the cut. If a hole looks machined rather than nibbled, think rat.
Burrows
Norway rats are diggers. Look for burrow entrances — holes roughly 2 to 4 inches across with loosened soil fanned outside — along foundations, under decks and sheds, in creek banks, and near shoreline rip-rap. Burrows near the house are one of the strongest rat indicators there is, and they're a near-water pattern in Tahoe.
Grease marks
Rats run the same routes nightly, and their fur oils build dark, greasy smears along foundation edges, entry holes, and pipe runs. Mouse rub marks exist but are faint; rat grease is obvious once you've seen it.
Sounds with weight
Heavy, deliberate movement in ground-floor walls or the crawl space; audible gnawing; occasional thumps. Compare with the light scurry described in our rats in walls guide — and remember that loud daytime noise is usually a squirrel, not any rodent.
Tracks and sightings
Rat footprints in dust, mud, or snow run about 3/4 inch for a hind foot, far bigger than mouse tracks. And a live sighting settles everything: a Norway rat is a big, heavy-bodied animal — nobody mistakes one for a mouse at arm's length.
Where Rat Sign Shows Up in Tahoe
Shoreline and near-water homes first: Tahoe Keys canals, the Upper Truckee River corridor, creek-side properties. Then commercial strips — dumpster areas, restaurant grease storage, loading zones around Stateline and the Y. Inland, forested, dry lots almost never produce rat sign; when a homeowner there reports "huge droppings," a closer look usually finds ordinary deer mouse evidence and a worried imagination. That's fine — checking is free.
What to Do If the Sign Says Rat
- Don't set mouse traps and hope. Rat traps are different equipment, and rats learn to avoid badly placed gear, which makes the real job harder.
- Photograph the droppings next to a coin and note locations — it speeds up identification.
- Call for the free inspection. Our rat removal service confirms or rules out rats, finds burrows and entries, and sets a program matched to what's actually there. Confirmed cases get heavy trapping, ground-level exclusion and sealing with a 12-month exclusion warranty, and sanitation.
- If it's mice, you get mouse pricing and our standard mice removal process — never a rat invoice for a mouse problem.
Pricing: inspection free, exclusion from $199, full service $349, prevention plans $49–$59/month. The confirmed scope sets the price.
Signs of Rats FAQs
I found big droppings in my crawl space. Definitely rats?▾
Large, blunt, raisin-sized pellets are strong rat evidence — size is the most reliable single indicator. But let us confirm on the free inspection before you spend anything; pellets plus burrows plus grease marks is a case, pellets alone is a suspicion.
Are roof rats a concern in Tahoe homes?▾
No. Roof rats don't survive our winters at this elevation. Rat cases here are Norway rats, at ground level, near water. Any company selling roof rat treatment in the basin is selling you a story.
Can rats and mice be in the same house?▾
Yes, though it's uncommon here. More often it's one or the other, and the droppings will show both sizes if both are present. The inspection reads the whole house, not just the spot that worried you.
How fast does a rat problem grow?▾
Norway rats breed quickly in warm months, and a burrow system near a food source can support a real colony by fall. Early confirmation matters — a suspected-rat call in June is a much smaller job than one in November.
Is rat sign a health concern?▾
Rat droppings and urine contaminate insulation and stored items and should be handled with the same wet-cleaning care as any rodent mess here — never dry-swept. We sanitize affected areas as part of the job, and our complete guide to rodent control in South Lake Tahoe explains the health picture honestly.
