Why Rodents Gnaw — And Why Wiring Is a Favorite Target
Rodents chew because they have to. A rodent's front teeth never stop growing, and constant gnawing keeps them worn down. If a mouse stopped gnawing, its teeth would keep growing until it could not eat. That need turns your home into a chewing menu:
- Electrical wiring — soft insulation is easy to strip, and wires run where rodents travel: along joists, through drilled stud holes, beside warm attic spaces.
- PEX plumbing lines — flexible water lines are soft enough for teeth, and a gnawed line can leak inside a wall for weeks before a stain appears.
- Wood, insulation, and stored material — shredded for nesting and gnawed to keep travel paths open.
Attics and crawlspaces under cabins in Bijou Pines, Sierra Tract, and Al Tahoe stay warm enough all winter for deer mice and house mice — while snow piles up outside at 6,225 feet.
Signs Rodents Are Chewing Wiring or Plumbing
Electrical warning signs
- Lights that flicker or dim when nothing else changes
- Breakers that trip repeatedly with no clear cause
- Outlets or switches that stop working on one wall
- A faint burning or hot-plastic smell near a wall or ceiling
Rodent activity signs
- Scratching or gnawing sounds in walls or the ceiling, usually at night
- Droppings in the attic, along wall edges, or near the furnace
- Clean, paired gnaw marks on wood, pipe insulation, or stored boxes
- Shredded insulation, nests in attic corners, rub marks along beams
What About Vehicles?▾
Cars that sit through a Tahoe winter get chewed too — a separate problem, covered on our page about mice chewing car wiring. This page is about your home, where the fire and leak risks are highest.
How We Handle Rodents Chewing Wires
1. Full inspection first
Your inspection is free. We check the attic, crawlspace, roofline, and utility penetrations for activity, droppings, nests, gnawed material, and every entry point — including gaps around pipes and conduit that mice use as highways.
2. Removal without loose poison indoors
We use snap traps inside, placed along the travel paths rodents actually use. We never use loose poison indoors — a poisoned mouse can die inside a wall, and poison does not stop the next mouse chewing the same wire. Outside, we use locked bait stations only.
3. Exclusion — the real fix
Trapping alone does not protect your wiring. Exclusion does. We seal entry points with materials rodents cannot chew through — the work on our rodent proofing and exclusion page, backed by our 12-month exclusion warranty. Attic cleanup can be added where droppings and ruined insulation need attention.
One honest note: we are rodent specialists, not electricians or plumbers. If we find stripped wiring or a gnawed water line, we show you where it is for your electrician or plumber — and our exclusion protects the repair.
Rodent pressure peaks in fall, when first snow in October and November pushes mice inside, and stays high all winter. Vacation homes in Tahoe Keys, Gardner Mountain, and Heavenly Valley that sit empty midweek are especially vulnerable. Protection plans run $49–59/mo. See our guide.
Rodents Chewing Wires FAQs
Can rodents chewing wires really start a fire?▾
Yes. Stripped wires can arc or short against nearby material. Only an electrician can judge a damaged run, but exposed wiring in a dry attic is urgent, not cosmetic.
How do I know if it is mice or something bigger?▾
Dropping size, gnaw mark width, and noise timing all help. Deer mice and house mice are the usual culprits here. We confirm the species at the free inspection, since trap placement and seal sizes depend on it.
Will traps alone solve the chewing?▾
No. Traps remove today's rodents; without exclusion, new mice enter through the same gaps and resume chewing within weeks. Full service pairs removal with sealing.
How much does it cost?▾
Inspection is free. Exclusion starts from $199, full service is $349, and protection plans are $49–59/mo. You get the exact price after the inspection, before work begins.
I found a chewed PEX line but no leak yet. Should I wait?▾
Do not wait. A gnawed line is weakened, and a wall leak can run a long time before it shows. Remove and seal out the rodents alongside the repair.
Do you offer same-day visits?▾
Yes, when scheduling allows. We are open Mon–Sat 7 AM–7 PM. Call early for the best chance of a same-day slot.
Stop the Chewing Before It Sparks or Leaks
Every night rodents spend in your walls is another night of gnawing on wires you cannot see. We will find them, remove them, and seal them out.
