Attic Entry Point Sealing in South Lake Tahoe, CA — Closing the Doors Mice Use
Mice rarely enter an attic from inside the house. They climb the outside — siding, stone veneer, a pine limb brushing the eave — and slip in where the roof meets the world. A gap the width of a pencil under a lifted shingle edge is an open door. Our job: find every one of those doors and close it in materials a mouse can't chew.
Sealing is the part that actually ends the problem — see how our rodent-proofing and exclusion in South Lake Tahoe works, from the free inspection to the 12-month warranty.
Sealing is part of our attic cleanup and exclusion work at Rodent Killer, backed by our 12-month exclusion warranty.

The Attic Entries We Seal Most in Tahoe
Roofline gaps. Where two roof planes meet, where an addition's roof ties in, and along eaves — especially on older cabins in Al Tahoe and Sierra Tract with stitched-on additions. Snow load shifts these seams every winter.
Vents. Roof, gable, and turbine vents with torn, rusted, or never-installed screening. Soffit vents are a classic — the original screen is flimsy, and mice push straight through.
Plumbing stacks and flue penetrations. Every pipe exiting your roof sits in an oversized hole. The factory boot cracks in Tahoe's freeze-thaw, and the gap hides from the ground.
Chimney and flashing gaps. Where flashing has lifted or mortar has shrunk, there's a sheltered channel running straight into the attic — a favorite on Heavenly Valley homes.
Eave returns and utility entries. Where power, cable, and propane lines meet the house, and hollow eave-return corners — mouse highways with weather protection built in.
How We Seal — Materials That Outlast the Mouse
Foam and caulk alone are a snack bar — mice chew through expanding foam in a night, so we use it only as backing, never as the barrier. Our seals are built from:
- Galvanized steel mesh and hardware cloth, screwed or stapled into framing — not glued and hoped for
- Copper mesh packing in irregular pipe gaps — rust-proof, and mice won't chew it
- Sheet metal flashing on seams and eave gaps
Every sealed point is photographed during our rodent proofing and exclusion inspection, so you can see what was open and how it closed. If mice are already inside, sealing pairs with mice in the attic removal — seal first or trap first is a judgment call we'll explain.
Why Sealing Matters More at 6,225 Feet
From the first October storm through spring melt, every mouse in the surrounding forest is actively shopping for winter shelter, and your warm attic advertises itself with heat leaking through those same unsealed gaps. Snow load then works on your roof all winter, opening seams wider. A home sealed in fall faces that pressure with the doors locked. A home that isn't gets restocked as fast as traps can empty it — and in an empty vacation home, nobody notices until the damage is done.

Attic Entry Point Sealing FAQs
Can't I just foam the gaps myself?▾
Foam is the most common failed fix we see. Mice chew through it easily, and from the ground you can't see most of the real entries — they're under flashing, inside eave returns, and around vent screens. Homeowners seal the two gaps they can see; the other eight stay open.
Do you seal while mice are still inside?▾
Sometimes. If the attic is actively occupied, sealing every exit can trap animals inside, so we usually trap first or fit one-way exits that let mice leave and not return. The order depends on what the inspection finds, and we'll walk you through it before work starts.
How long does the sealing last?▾
Steel mesh, copper packing, and flashing don't degrade like foam and caulk do, and every exclusion job carries our 12-month warranty — if a rodent gets past our sealing within the year, we come back and fix it.
What if my roof itself is damaged?▾
Sometimes the "entry point" is a failed shingle, a cracked plumbing boot, or lifted flashing that really belongs to a roofer. We'll show you the photos and tell you honestly which repairs are ours and which are a roofer's — and we can usually seal the rodent access around them.
