Mice in the Attic in South Lake Tahoe, CA — What's Up There and How We Get Them Out
Attics are the number one rodent destination in Tahoe homes: warm, dry, undisturbed, and lined with insulation that makes perfect nesting material. In a vacation home empty between Labor Day and ski season, mice can go a whole shoulder season unnoticed — shredding insulation, fouling it with droppings and urine, and chewing wiring.
Hearing them inside the house is the sign to act — our mice removal in South Lake Tahoe starts with a free same-day inspection.
We're Rodent Killer, a locally owned rodent control company. Attic cleanup and mouse removal are our core work on the South Shore. Here's how a mice-in-the-attic job works — and what it costs.

Why Tahoe Attics Fill With Mice Every Fall
The pattern is driven by weather. The first storm over Echo Summit pushes deer mice out of the Jeffrey pine forest toward the nearest warm structure — yours. Ground cover disappears under snow, nights fall well below freezing, and a mouse that fits through a pencil-width gap starts testing every vent, eave, and pipe penetration.
Housing stock helps them. Older cabins in Al Tahoe, Sierra Tract, and Tahoe Valley were built with generous venting and additions stitched onto additions — every seam a door. Once a few are in, scent trails recruit more — two mice in October can be a colony by January.
Signs It's Mice (Not Something Else)
- Droppings along beams and in insulation — rice-sized, pointed at the ends
- Nests — shredded insulation and fabric balled into corners
- Scratching and scurrying overhead at night
Not sure what you're hearing? Our [complete guide to rodent control in South Lake Tahoe](https://rodentcontrolsouthlaketahoe.com/rodent-control-south-lake-tahoe-ca/) breaks down signs species by species. And if the droppings look bigger than expected, see rats in the attic — true rats are uncommon at this elevation, and most "rat" calls here turn out to be mice.
How We Clear Mice From an Attic
1. Free inspection, attic included. We go up there, photograph the sign, count the entry points, and show you what we found before you pay anything.
2. Trapping on the runways. Professional snap traps on the travel paths mice actually use, checked and re-set until activity stops — the same core work as our mice removal service. No loose poison in your attic, ever: a poisoned mouse dies in a wall void, and in a closed-up vacation home, that smell waits for you.
3. Sealing the entries. Trapping alone is a subscription to the same problem next fall. We seal the gaps the mice used — the attic entry point sealing step — backed by our 12-month exclusion warranty.
4. Cleanup. Nests and fouled insulation come out and the space is sanitized. Rodent nest removal is handled wet, with disinfectant and respirators — deer mouse droppings can carry hantavirus, so nothing up there gets dry-swept.

Mice in the Attic FAQs
How do mice get into my attic in the first place?▾
Usually not from inside — they climb. Deer mice scale siding and tree limbs, then slip in at the roofline: a lifted shingle edge, an unscreened vent, the gap where two roof planes meet. A quarter-inch gap is plenty. Our inspection traces the actual routes.
I only hear them sometimes. Is it really an infestation?▾
Intermittent noise usually means a few mice using the attic at night — exactly when you want to act. A pair in October is a colony by mid-winter. The inspection is free, so there's no reason to guess.
Is it safe to just set traps myself?▾
You can, and for a single mouse it sometimes works. But DIY traps don't find the entry points or address contaminated insulation. If activity continues after a week of trapping, the mice are coming and going freely — an exclusion problem, not a trap problem.
Do you work on vacation homes and rentals?▾
Constantly — empty homes are Tahoe's highest-risk homes. We coordinate with owners and property managers, send photo reports, and our monthly plans check between guest stays so a problem doesn't greet your renters first.
Are attic mice a health risk?▾
Deer mouse droppings can carry hantavirus — uncommon but serious, and why contaminated insulation is handled wet, with respirators and disinfectant, never dry-swept or household-vacuumed.
How fast can you come out?▾
Same-day visits run Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM, and every job starts with the free inspection. Call (530) 203 0122 or use our contact page.
