Why Rats Struggle at This Elevation
The rat most people picture, the roof rat, is a warm-climate, above-ground climber. Roof rats essentially do not survive Tahoe winters — claims of roof rat infestations up here should make you ask hard questions of whoever's selling the treatment.
The Norway rat is the only rat with a real foothold possibility in the basin, and it's a ground-and-water animal: burrows along shorelines, creek banks, and the Upper Truckee River; heavy cover near the lake; occasional outbuildings and commercial dumpsters near the water. A Norway rat in a wall is almost always at ground level, in a home near water, and it got there from a burrow system outside — not from the roofline. Our signs of rats in the home page covers the evidence that separates a real rat case from everything else.
What Rat Activity in a Wall Actually Sounds Like
- Heavier, slower movement than mice — deliberate thumps and drags rather than light scurrying
- Loud gnawing — rats cut through wood, and you can hear it working
- Ground-floor or foundation walls, near kitchens, utility rooms, or a shoreline-facing side of the house
- Activity backed by physical sign outside: burrow holes, grease marks at entry points, and droppings the size of raisins, not rice
Light, fast, nighttime scratching in an upstairs wall or ceiling, with no outside sign, is mice until proven otherwise — see mice in walls for the usual story.
How We Handle a Suspected Rat-in-Wall Call
1. Identification before invoices. The free inspection reads the sign: droppings size, gnaw damage, entry points, burrows, and setting. If it's mice or a squirrel, we tell you plainly and quote the right job — our reputation on the South Shore is worth more than one oversold rat program.
2. If it's confirmed rats: our rat removal service runs a proper rat program — heavy-duty traps placed on confirmed runs in the crawl space, attic access points, and wall-adjacent routes, with repeat checks until activity stops. Rats are neophobic — wary of new objects — so rat trapping is a patient, multi-visit job, not a one-afternoon fix.
3. Exclusion at ground level. Rat entries get sealed with materials that stand up to rat teeth: heavy-gauge steel mesh, metal flashing, and concrete where burrows meet the foundation. Our rodent proofing and exclusion work is backed by a 12-month exclusion warranty.
4. Sanitation. Rat droppings and urine-soaked insulation are removed and the area sanitized; burrows against the foundation are collapsed and the harborage addressed so the next rat doesn't inherit the address.
What It Costs
The inspection and the honest ID are free. Exclusion starts at $199, full service at $349, and monthly prevention plans run $49–$59/month. If your "rat problem" turns out to be mice, you pay mouse prices — the confirmed scope sets the price, never the scarier guess. Our complete guide to rodent control in South Lake Tahoe lays out species-by-species expectations for the basin.
Rats in Walls FAQs
How can I tell if it's rats or mice in the wall without opening it?▾
Sound and sign. Mice are light and quick, mostly after dark, with rice-sized droppings. Rats are heavy and deliberate, gnaw audibly, and leave raisin-sized droppings and outside evidence like burrows and grease marks. The free inspection settles it — no wall-opening required for an ID.
Do roof rats live in South Lake Tahoe?▾
Essentially no. At our elevation and winter temperatures, roof rats don't establish. If a company quotes you a roof rat program here, get a second opinion — we'll give you one for free.
Where in Tahoe do real rat cases happen?▾
Near water, mostly: shoreline homes, properties along creeks and the Upper Truckee River, and commercial areas with dumpsters and heavy ground cover. Norway rats burrow; they don't appear in upstairs walls of inland cabins.
The noise is only in the daytime. Is that rats?▾
Daytime wall noise is usually a squirrel — Douglas squirrels are bold, active all day, and excellent climbers. Rats and mice are overwhelmingly nocturnal. Daytime scratching is one of the strongest "not a rat" clues there is.
Can rats damage my home?▾
Yes — confirmed rats gnaw wood, wiring, and plumbing lines, and they contaminate insulation. That's why a real case gets a full program rather than a couple of traps. It's also why the ID matters: you want the heavy response when it's warranted, not as a default upsell.
