Rats in the Attic in South Lake Tahoe, CA — The Honest Answer
Whatever is up there is shredding insulation, leaving droppings, and chewing wiring — it needs to come out. The first step is an honest identification, not a rat-sized invoice. Our inspections are free, and if we find mice, we'll tell you it's mice.
Hearing them inside the house is the sign to act — our mice removal in South Lake Tahoe starts with a free same-day inspection.

Why Rats Are Rare at This Elevation
Roof rats — the climbing rats of Sacramento and Bay Area attics — don't survive Tahoe winters. Norway rats are tougher, but up here they're a near-water, ground-level story: burrows along the Upper Truckee River, the Tahoe Keys canals, and lakefront rock walls. Even then they're uncommon, and they almost never set up in attics — Norway rats are burrowers, not climbers.
What does live here, in numbers, is the deer mouse. It's native to the Jeffrey pine forest around town, it climbs beautifully, and a group of them crossing ceiling joists at 2 AM sounds far bigger than it is. Squirrels account for most of the genuinely heavy noise we inspect.
How We Tell What's Actually Up There
Identification isn't guesswork — the evidence is specific:
- Droppings. Deer mouse droppings are rice-sized with pointed ends. Rat droppings are far larger — a half inch or more, blunt-ended. No mistaking one for the other.
- Nests and grease. Shredded insulation balls in corners point to mice; squirrels drag in pine needles and leaves. Rats leave oily grease marks on the beams they squeeze past; mice rarely do.
Our attic cleanup inspections document it all with photos.
If It Really Is Rats
It happens occasionally — most often in lakefront and canal-side homes in Tahoe Keys, where Norway rats burrow for a season and work upward. When we confirm rats, the approach is the same discipline, scaled up: trapping on confirmed routes (the core of our rat removal service), entries sealed in steel, contaminated material removed.
Whatever It Is, the Fix Is the Same Discipline
1. Free inspection and honest ID. Attic, roofline, crawlspace, and vents, with photographs. You get the species answer in writing.
2. Removal. Snap traps matched to the animal we're actually dealing with — see our mice in the attic page for the usual case.
3. Exclusion. Every gap sealed in materials rodents can't chew — see our attic entry point sealing page for how that works. Backed by our 12-month exclusion warranty.
4. Cleanup. Nests and fouled insulation removed, the space sanitized. Deer mouse droppings can carry hantavirus, so cleanup is always wet work with respirators and disinfectant.
What It Costs
| Service | Price | What You Get |

If it turns out to be mice, the price doesn't grow to match your first guess — you pay for the job actually in your attic, confirmed in writing after the free inspection.
Rats in the Attic FAQs
Can roof rats really not live in South Lake Tahoe?▾
Not through a winter. Roof rats are a warm-climate species; sustained freezing at 6,225 feet kills them. Any company selling you a roof rat program here either doesn't know Tahoe or hopes you don't. The climbing, attic-dwelling rodent here is the deer mouse.
The noise sounds way too loud for mice. Are you sure?▾
Usually, yes — sound plays tricks in a quiet house. Mice running across drywall or ducting sound enormous at night, and insulation amplifies it. Squirrels are the other common culprit for genuinely heavy noise. The droppings settle it in one look, which is why the inspection comes first.
What if I already bought rat traps and caught nothing?▾
Mice walk past rat traps — the trigger pressure is wrong for them, and traps set in open floor space miss the wall-edge runways rodents actually travel. Mismatched equipment is one of the most common reasons DIY efforts stall.
Are Norway rats ever a problem near the lake?▾
Occasionally, yes — burrows along canal banks in Tahoe Keys, rock walls, and shoreline structures. They're ground animals, so the fix focuses on burrows, harborage, and ground-level entries rather than the attic. We'll check both zones in the inspection.
