Why Kitchens Draw House Mice and Deer Mice
A kitchen offers everything a mouse needs in a few square feet: crumbs under the stove, pet food out overnight, a slow drip under the sink, and the warm, dark void behind the dishwasher. House mice happily live indoors near food. Deer mice — our principal Tahoe problem — come in from outside, the crawlspace, or the attic, then follow pipes and wires straight here. Wiping up droppings never solves it: the route and nest remain.
How Mice Get Into Your Kitchen
Stove, Dishwasher, and Refrigerator Penetrations
Gas, water, and electrical lines pass through floors and walls behind appliances, and the holes cut for them are usually oversized. Mice follow those lines up from the crawlspace or wall void and emerge behind the stove or dishwasher — out of sight, inches from food.
Plumbing Penetrations Under the Sink
Under-sink supply and drain lines leave gaps where they pass through the cabinet floor and wall. Mice traveling inside the wall step straight into the cabinet, then into drawers and the pantry.
The Garage and Pantry Connection
Many Tahoe kitchens connect to the garage or sit above the crawlspace. Mice staging in the garage — see mice in the garage — follow the shared wall into the kitchen, where a pantry with bagged goods at floor level is often the first stop.
Signs of Mice in the Kitchen
- Droppings in drawers, on pantry shelves, under the sink, or behind appliances
- Chewed corners on bagged food, pet food, or birdseed stored indoors
- Shredded paper or insulation tucked behind the stove — nesting material
- A stale, musky odor under the sink or in closed cabinets
- Scratching inside the wall behind the kitchen at night
- A mouse bolting for the gap under an appliance when lights come on
If a live mouse is loose, our emergency rodent control page explains same-day visits.
How We Handle Mice in the Kitchen
Inspect and Trace the Route
We start with a free rodent inspection: kitchen first, then crawlspace, attic, garage, and exterior — finding where mice nest, not just where they feed.
Trap on Travel Routes
Inside, we set snap traps along wall edges, behind appliances, and under cabinets. No loose poison indoors — poison does not belong anywhere near food preparation areas.
Seal the Penetrations
We seal gaps around appliance and plumbing lines, plus the exterior and crawlspace entries feeding them. Exclusion starts from $199, full service is $349, plans run $49–59/mo, and exclusion work carries a 12-month exclusion warranty.
Sanitation Guidance
We walk you through what to discard — any food in chewed or contaminated packaging goes — and how to clean and disinfect drawers, shelves, and under-sink spaces.
The Tahoe Kitchen Problem: Empty Houses, Warm Walls
At 6,225 feet, rodent season runs in reverse: the push comes in October and November as first snow falls, pressure holds all winter, and there is a second shuffle at spring melt. Vacation homes and rentals that sit empty midweek are especially vulnerable — a warm, stocked, undisturbed kitchen in Heavenly Valley or near Stateline is ideal mouse habitat for days.
Honestly on species: roof rats almost never survive Tahoe winters, and Norway rats are uncommon, mostly near water. Kitchen problems here are mice — house mice and deer mice — and that is what we plan for.
Mice in the Kitchen FAQs
Are mouse droppings dangerous to my family?▾
Droppings contaminate the surfaces they touch, so keep food sealed, discard damaged packaging, and clean affected drawers and shelves before reuse. We advise on your specific situation during the visit.
Why do I only see droppings, never the mouse?▾
Mice are nocturnal and travel inside walls and voids. Droppings in drawers mean they feed there regularly — usually nightly — whether you see one or not.
Will sealing behind my stove and dishwasher stop them?▾
It is essential, but we also seal the garage, crawlspace, and exterior entries supplying them. Sealing only the last gap often moves the problem to the next room.
Do you use poison in kitchens?▾
No loose poison indoors, especially around food. Inside means snap traps on travel routes; exterior bait, if used, goes only in locked stations.
How much does it cost?▾
The inspection is free. Exclusion starts from $199, full service is $349, and plans are $49–59/mo, quoted after inspecting and before any work.
Can you work between rental guests?▾
Yes — across South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Tahoma, Homewood, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Zephyr Cove, and Incline Village.
